Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five years old in Nigeria (WHO, 2024). It accounts for approximately 15% of all childhood deaths, making it a critical public health concern (UNICEF, 2024). Effective management of pediatric pneumonia requires early detection, prompt treatment, and continuous monitoring, which are primarily handled by nurses in healthcare settings (Adeyemi & Ojo, 2023).
In Adamawa State, where healthcare resources are often limited, nurses play a crucial role in pneumonia management by providing early diagnosis, administering antibiotics, ensuring oxygen therapy, and educating caregivers on prevention strategies (Bello & Musa, 2024). However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of nurses' roles in managing pediatric pneumonia in Adamawa State hospitals.
This study aims to assess nurses' contributions to pediatric pneumonia management, identify challenges they face, and propose recommendations for improving care quality.
Despite pneumonia being preventable and treatable, its burden remains high in Adamawa State due to delayed diagnosis, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and limited awareness among caregivers (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2023). Nurses serve as frontline healthcare providers, yet their role in pneumonia management is often overlooked or under-supported.
Challenges such as insufficient training, high patient load, and lack of essential medications further hinder effective management (Oladele et al., 2024). This study seeks to appraise nurses’ role in pediatric pneumonia management and recommend strategies to enhance their effectiveness.
This study focuses on pediatric pneumonia cases managed by nurses in Adamawa State hospitals. Limitations may include variations in pneumonia management practices across different hospitals.
